Business Aircraft Flight Courses General Information

Type Rating

Type Rating Courses provide the knowledge and skills necessary to meet or exceed the performance criteria set by the various regulatory authorities (FAA, JAA, Transport Canada, or ICAO). The pilot demonstrates mastery of the aircraft with the outcome of a procedure, maneuver, or operation never in doubt. Depending on experience, a type rating can be accomplished on an initial, transition, or upgrade course.

Type Rating Course Prerequisites

A pilot may enroll in this course with a minimum of a Private Pilot Certificate with Multiengine and Instrument-Airplane Land Ratings.

An Airline Transport Pilot certificate may be obtained during any type rating course. The individual must meet ATP qualification requirements and present acceptable documentation of flight experience prior to the practical test.

Supervised Operating Experience Restrictions

For Part 91 Operators

When a flight simulator is used to accomplish 100% of all training and testing for a multiengine jet type rating, the FAA may place a supervised operating experience (SOE) limitation on a PIC authority unless the pilot meets the aeronautical experience of 14 CFR Part 61.63 or 61.157 and has at least one of the following:

  • Unlimited type rating for a multiengine turbojet airplane or designated by a military service as PIC of a multiengine turbojet airplane
  • At least 2000 hr of flight time, of which 500 hr must be in multiengine turbine powered airplanes
  • At least 500 hr of flight time in the same type airplane as the rating sought
  • At least 1000 hr of flight time in at least two different airplanes requiring a type rating

For part 135 Operators

In addition to the 14 CFR Part 91 SOE restrictions, an individual conducting operations under 14 CFR Part 135 must meet the additional SOE requirements stated in FAA HBAT 99-12 as amended or superseded.

Recurrent Course

This course provides the pilot, currently qualified in a particular crew position, with training to refresh and reinforce the knowledge and skills necessary to meet or exceed performance standards. The pilot demonstrates mastery of the aircraft with the outcome of a procedure, maneuver, or operation never in doubt.

Recurrent Course Prerequisites

If not currently qualified to serve in the crew position for which training is to be provided, individuals must have completed a training course, approved under Part 142 or Part 135 for the same type and model aircraft.

Mandatory Pilot Security Requirements

United States security regulations prohibit aviation training companies from providing training in the operation of an aircraft without prior approval. As a minimum, a pilot entering any flight training program at the DFW Customer Training facility, or a pilot entering a FAA flight training program at the Montreal Customer Training Centre, must provide proof of citizenship.
